LGBTQ+ Collection, Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, USM Libraries This link opens in a new windowThis collection preserves the history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer + communities in Maine by collecting material produced by organizations and individuals. The archives of groups such as EqualityMaine, ACTUP, Maine Won’t Discriminate, Maine Speak Out Project, Equal Protection Portland, and South Portland Citizens for Justice document the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement in Maine. The collection also has the papers of such leaders as Steve Bull, Diane Elze, Stan Fortuna, Peter Garrity, Susan Henderson, Dale McCormick, Betsy Parsons, Peter Prizer, Lois Reckitt, Howard Solomn, Jean Vermette, and Barb Wood. There are records of a variety of social-cultural-service groups such as Northern Lambda Norde, GAYLA, GLSEN, and Gay Men’s Chorus. The LGBTQ+ collection includes a book collection, including 39 newsletters and newspapers published by queer community groups across Maine from 1970s-2000s, two oral history collections and recordings of public programs.
