Q. How do the use of AND/OR/NOT and quotation marks help limit results?
Quotation marks - in most search interfaces, keeps a phrase intact. Prevents retrieval of results like "Global approaches to warming up leftovers". Use if you're getting way too many irrelevant results, and your phrase is truly non-negotiable.
AND - specifies that multiple criteria must be met: unemployment AND African Americans will not retrieve items that only mention one or the other.
OR - doesn't actually limit; it makes a search more inclusive and is a way of casting a wider net for one of the concepts in your search:
mothers in prison OR incarcerated mothers OR maternal incarceration
NOT - excludes items that have a given word/phrase; best used with something really distinctive (Stonewall not Jackson will get
