What is IDEC?

INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, AND EQUITY COUNCIL (IDEC)

The Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Council (IDEC) was formerly known as the Intercultural and Diversity Advisory Council (IDAC).
The council changed its name in the academic year 2020-21, when it stepped out of the President’s office to become a stand-alone council.
Anyone in the USM community may attend and participate in any or all of the four council meetings each academic year. Anyone may vote in an IDEC meeting who is an active member in an IDEC committee. Active membership is defined by each committee. Each committee, and the council itself, is led by two co-chairs, elected every two years.

Definition of Anti-Racism

The following definitions come from the Racial Equity Tools Glossary

Anti-Racism
Anti-Racism is defined as the work of actively opposing racism by advocating for changes in political, economic, and social life. Anti-racism tends to be an individualized approach, and set up in opposition to individual racist behaviors and impacts.

Anti-Racist
An anti-racist is someone who is supporting an antiracist policy through their actions or expressing antiracist ideas. This includes the expression of ideas that racial groups are equals and do not need developing, and supporting policies that reduce racial inequity.
